We got to Raufarhofn the night before last. 90 NM from Bakkagerdi, north around Langanes then WNW to this splendid harbor. We had a following wind the whole way, under main sail only, as the jib halyard was jammed, and going up the mast requires calm waters.
Yesterday we walked along the coast. Lots of eider duck families, and plenty of nests, one with newly hatched ducklings frozen into immobility, a reflex to the intruder. A low windswept land with gentle curves, beautiful fussy horses and absolutely teeming with bird life.
Speaking of the halyard problem. These problems seem to come in bursts (Murphy's Law?). The toilet is not working with two outtake pumps with new parts both showing different problems - mystifying - and I may go via a side aperture into the holding tank to chip out the calcium carbonate buildup. The paraffin kitchen stove burners, after dismantling & reassembling about 5x, is currently semi functional, on an ad hoc basis, with a rash of parts ordered to be picked up poste restante at Isafjordur. (This has not prevented Hue & Josh from cooking an endless succession of splendid meals and desserts). The steering cables came off twice, now surely repaired. And of course the burst toilet door, also repaired. Yesterday we took the halyard block to a car mechanic for drilling & cutting a part or 2, and I think it will go up fine. Never have I seen a such a burst of problems! And this comes immediately after an outstanding 2 month refit of Teddy.
Raufarhofn is 3 miles S of the Arctic Circle, and the air with W & NW winds (the direction we want to go) sure is nippy, with the diesel hearing stove running 24/7. Very bright at night.
